Rehabilitation of the panoramic path and monumental lighting on the island of Maligrad

The rehabilitation project of the panoramic path and the monumental lighting of the island of Maligrad is expected to start soon. The news was given on social networks by the prefect of the Korça District, Nertil Jole, according to which the project was designed by the Korça Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage, with financial support from the European Union, the Ministry of Culture of Albania and North Macedonia.
This rehabilitation comes within the “Smart4you2” project. The implementation of the project is expected to increase the number of visitors to Prespa, as a very special destination of the Korça District.
Maligrad is a small island located in the Albanian part of Lake Prespa. It is characterized by a large number of caves, suitable for wild fauna. In the interior of the island is the church of St. Mary. An inscription on the south side, the earliest in this church, belongs to the year 1345 and the first phase of the decoration of this church with frescoes. This church is an important tourist attraction not only for the national park of Prespa, but for the entire region and Albania.
Objects such as tiles, columns and capitals have also been found in Maligrad, which according to archaeologists belong to a Paleo-Christian church that is thought to have been in the upper part of the lake.
