Kosovo’s President Osmani Defends Sovereignty at Brdo-Brijuni Summit

Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani criticized Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić for attending the Brdo-Brijuni summit with arrogance and offensive remarks. She said Vučić tried to disrupt the meeting, but the regional leaders ultimately approved a joint declaration unanimously.

Osmani highlighted Vučić’s complaints about the defense alliance signed this year between Kosovo, Albania, and Croatia. She emphasized the pact aims solely to protect the three countries.

“We support regional cooperation, but we will protect our state interests, sovereignty, and territorial integrity,” Osmani said. She added that Kosovo has never attacked or occupied another country and forms defensive alliances to safeguard against external threats, specifically from Serbia.

Osmani also criticized the European Union for delaying the removal of sanctions and not reviewing Kosovo’s EU membership application. She argued that member states base the process on political agendas rather than merit.

The summit included Albanian President Bajram Begaj, Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar, Croatian President Zoran Milanović, Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović, North Macedonian President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.

The Brdo-Brijuni Process is an annual multilateral event in the Western Balkans, launched in 2010 by Slovenia and Croatia. It involves EU member states Slovenia and Croatia, and EU candidate or potential candidate countries from the region: Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia, North Macedonia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Serbian President Vučić acknowledged tensions with Osmani. “Imagine Vjosa Osmani speaking about territorial integrity while everyone else hears and shakes their heads,” he said, adding a sarcastic remark about her UN tourism days.
