Kurti Urges EU to Deliver Membership Questionnaire for Kosovo

Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti met today with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels.
During the meeting, he reaffirmed Kosovo’s commitment to European integration and urged the European Commission to deliver the membership questionnaire as soon as possible.
He also called for granting Kosovo candidate status without further delay.

Kurti expressed gratitude to von der Leyen for her consistent engagement and continued support on Kosovo’s European path.
Meanwhile, the two leaders discussed ways to deepen relations between Kosovo and the European Union.
They also reviewed progress on reforms in the rule of law, security, and economic development.

In addition, Kurti highlighted the democratic progress seen in the recent local elections held last Sunday.
He emphasized that the elections were free, fair, and aligned with the highest European standards.
Furthermore, he underlined the importance of a smooth transition of power in municipalities where leadership will change.
He reiterated the government’s determination to safeguard democratic processes from any form of external interference.

To strengthen economic cooperation under the “Single Market Highway” initiative, Kurti presented von der Leyen with three official letters.
These letters outlined Kosovo’s interest in launching strategic dialogues in agriculture, information and communication technology (ICT), and the defense industry.
According to Kurti, these are sectors where Kosovo holds a comparative advantage and significant growth potential.

Moreover, the Prime Minister reminded that Kosovo formally applied for EU membership three years ago—a first step in a process that may take years to complete.
At that time, European Commission spokesperson Ana Pisonero confirmed that the EU supports Kosovo’s efforts toward membership.

“When it comes to membership applications, the procedures are clearly defined by the EU Treaty,” Pisonero said.

Finally, under Article 49 of the EU Treaty, any European country that respects and promotes European values is eligible to apply for membership.
Consequently, Kosovo remains the last country in the Western Balkans still awaiting progress on its EU integration path.
