Arbëresh Culture Highlighted in Study Book “Etnografi Tingujsh”

The Italian Institute of Culture, together with Berk Publishing, presented the book “Etnografi Tingujsh – Essays on Orality, the Arbëresh, and Epic Song”. It was written by Nicola Scaldaferri and translated by Prof. Mikaela Minga.

The event turned into a lively and informative discussion. Attendees also saw the documentary “4 Generations”, exploring the lives and traditions of four generations of Arbëresh women. This premiered for the Albanian audience.

Scholars discussed how oral traditions are preserved, transformed, and sometimes lost when written down. Scaldaferri noted that studies in Albania often focus narrowly on language and literature.

The authors guided the audience from sound archives to the cultural landscapes of Arbëresh communities. They examined field research methods, the intimate and creative dimensions of epic songs, and the cultural processes behind sound.

Through the concept of sound ethnography, Scaldaferri explored performance, the body, environment, and recording technology as part of cultural creation.
