Maestro Zhani Ciko, one of Albania’s most distinguished cultural figures, celebrates his 80th birthday today. He is a musician, violinist, conductor, and leader who shaped the country’s artistic life.

Born in Tirana on 8 December 1945, he began playing the violin at age five. He trained generations of musicians and raised the standards of professional music in Albania.

At 25, he became Artistic Director of the National Opera and Ballet. He later directed the RTSH Symphony Orchestra and the National Opera and Ballet, leading hundreds of concerts and international tours.

He created 20 new productions and 55 opera and ballet premieres. He also expanded Albania’s repertoire with works by Verdi, Puccini, Mozart, and Wagner.

With the “Young Virtuosos of Tirana” orchestra and the AMRA ensemble, he won top European awards, including the Grand Prize of Vienna and Summa Cum Laude in Belgium. He also earned awards as a solo violinist at the “May Concerts.”

Ciko received national and international honors, including “Grand Master” of Albania, Austria’s “Cross of Honor for Science and Art,” and France’s “Knight of Arts and Letters.” A high school in Patos carries his name.

He continues to serve as President of the TKOBAP Board and contributes to international cultural associations.

Through his vision, passion, and lifelong dedication, Zhani Ciko shaped generations of artists and strengthened Albania’s cultural heritage.
