“Kelmendi n’festë,” a beautiful tradition of the Highlands

“Kelmendi n’festë,” a cherished tradition of the Highlands, brought festive energy and color to the year’s end. Residents and visitors gathered in Tamarë. The sounds of the lahuta and çifteli filled the air. These instruments symbolize the area’s cultural heritage.

Prime Minister Edi Rama shared moments from the celebration, held ahead of Christmas and New Year. He praised the preservation and promotion of the authentic traditions of Malësia e Madhe. He said they strengthen cultural identity and boost local tourism.

“‘Kelmendi n’festë’ is a beautiful tradition of the Highlands,” Rama said. “The sounds of the lahuta and çifteli gave even more life to the festive atmosphere.”

The Kelmend administrative unit organized the event for the first time. Organizers aim to make it an annual tradition.

The celebration featured songs, dances, and local rituals. It created a special atmosphere for residents and guests ahead of the holidays.

Organizers said the initiative follows the example of the Tamara festival, now a well-established tradition. They are working to secure a permanent place for the Kelmend festival, held in December, on the region’s cultural calendar.

“Kelmendi n’festë” marks another step in promoting cultural values, hospitality, and local traditions. It turns the year’s end into a time of unity and celebration for the community.
