TIRANA, January 6 – Sandër Prosi, Honor of the Nation, was born on January 6, 1920 (1920–1985). He became a towering figure in Albanian theatre and cinema. His powerful voice, gaze, and character brought historical figures to life on screen, leaving lasting impressions across generations.

After providing the dubbing voice in the film “Skënderbeu” (Skanderbeg, 1953), Prosi acted in twelve feature films until 1972. These included “Debatik” (1961) [Debatik], “Detyrë e posaçme” (1963) [Special Task], “Vitet e para” (1965) [The Early Years], “Oshëtimë në bregdet” (1966) [Thunder on the Coast], “Ngadhnjim mbi vdekjen” (1967) [Victory Over Death], “Horizonte të hapura” (1968) [Open Horizons], “Plagë të vjetra” (1969) [Old Wounds], “Guximtarët” (1970) [The Brave Ones], “Gjurma” (1970) [The Trace], “I teti në bronz” (1970) [The Bronze] Bust], “Mëngjese lufte” (1971) [War Mornings], and “Yjet e netëve të gjata” (1972) [Stars of the Long Nights].

Prosi became especially remembered for portraying Ismail Qemali in “Nëntori i dytë” (Second November, 1982), directed by Viktor Gjika. His performances left an indelible mark on Albanian cultural memory.

His mother was from Shkodër, and his father descended from the Vlachs of Voskopoja. In theatre, he created over eighty-five roles in works by Albanian authors such as Andon Zako Çajupi, Kolë Jakova, Besim Levonja, Loni Papa, Ismail Kadare, Teodor Laço, Ruzhdi Pulaha, Dritëro Agolli, Dhimitër Xhuvani, and international writers including William Shakespeare, Friedrich Schiller, Anton Chekhov, Carlo Goldoni, Maxim Gorki, and Bertolt Brecht.

In cinema, he acted in around thirty films. He left behind a rare gallery of characters, a school of acting, and a reference point for new generations. Prosi passed away on March 25, 1985, while filming “Pranverë e hidhur (Bitter Spring). He received the title “People’s Artist,” Republic Awards, and various orders and medals for his major contribution to stage and film arts.
