Cross-Throwing Ritual Held in Several Cities Across Albania

Orthodox believers across Albania marked the Feast of the Blessed Water today. However, authorities imposed restrictions in cities affected by heavy rainfall.

In Durrës, Archbishop Joan blessed the water and the faithful at the Church of Saint Paul and Saint Astius. Due to severe weather conditions, officials cancelled the cross-throwing ritual in both Durrës and Gjirokastër.

Meanwhile, in Korçë, believers gathered according to tradition. They took holy water with faith and spiritual humility. They preserved a centuries-old custom and prayed for peace, health, and prosperity during the year. The cross-throwing ceremony took place at the city fountain.

In Fier, Orthodox believers assembled at the Church of Saint George to celebrate the feast. Metropolitan Nicholas of the Metropolis of Apollonia led the morning liturgy.

At the same time, believers in Berat faced harsh weather conditions. Eight young men plunged into the Osum River. Metropolitan Asti cast the cross, followed by hundreds of citizens.

The Blessed Water symbolises purification, renewal, and blessing for believers and their surroundings. It represents one of God’s most precious gifts. It brings holiness into daily life and wards off evil from the world around us.
