The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports: Continuous monitoring to protect cultural heritage

TIRANA, January 7 – The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Blendi Gonxhja, said that due to the recent heavy rainfall, the responsible cultural heritage structures continue continuous monitoring across the territory, prioritizing the protection of cultural assets.

He noted that rainfall persisted in Shkodër County and surrounding areas, while controlled releases from the Koman and Vau i Dejës hydroelectric cascades have begun.

The minister said the situation worsened in the city of Lezha, where the Drin River overflowed, causing flooding in the city center. The flooding affected the coastal area near the ancient walls of ‘Lis’ [ancient castle] and the Skanderbeg Memorial because the city’s drainage system could not handle the high river level.

Gonxhja confirmed that the situation at other cultural sites is under constant observation. Despite increased river and stream flows, no deterioration has been reported so far.

He added that inspections of bridges under the jurisdiction of the Regional Directorate of National Culture in Vlora found no issues. Monitoring continues in the Saranda sector, where field contacts so far report no concerning situations. He said more detailed information will be provided as it becomes available.

The minister emphasized that field monitoring continues with priority on protecting cultural heritage and responding promptly to any potential risks.
