Gonxhja: Despite Heavy Rain, the Lead Mosque Has No Problems

While authorities monitor the impact of rainfall on cultural heritage sites, Tourism, Culture and Sports Minister Blendi Gonxhja said the Lead Mosque in Shkodra faces no problems.
“Despite the heavy rain in recent hours, we have identified no issues at the Lead Mosque, a site of rare historical and cultural value,” Minister Gonxhja reported.
He added that the pumps continue to operate at full capacity. The protection system works normally. It safeguards the monument from flooding.
Restoration and conservation works, carried out with the support of the TIKA Foundation, have fully preserved the site’s values. Specialists from the Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage in Shkodra continue to monitor the situation.
The full restoration of the Lead Mosque in Shkodra ended in May 2025. People consider the mosque a precious jewel of the city, both for its history and its architecture.
Experts rank the Lead Mosque among the 50 most beautiful monuments in the world. It is also the largest Ottoman-style mosque in Albania. The building blends Turkish and Arab architectural elements. Mehmet Pasha Bushati built it in 1773–1774. For many years, it served as the country’s largest mosque.
