Actor and director Edmond Mëhilli has passed away today at the age of 79. He was a leading figure of the Albanian stage and cultural life.

Born on August 23, 1947, in Shkodra, Mëhilli graduated from the Higher Institute of Arts in 1970. Soon after, he began his directing career in Puka from 1970 to 1974. Then, he worked for 15 years with the Shkodra Estrada, from 1974 to 1989.

Meanwhile, he contributed to Radio Shkodra and the Shkodra District House of Culture. After 2003, he joined the “Migjeni” Theatre, where he continued his artistic mission.

As a director, Mëhilli stood out for his precise use of gesture and language. Moreover, he crafted strong comic situations. As a result, he created believable characters and balanced stage compositions.

In 1980, critics named him Best Director at the National Festival of Professional Estradas. Subsequently, the show series “Days of Smiles” won First Prize in 1983–1984. Later, during the 1985–1986 season, his work ranked among the best at national humour meetings.

In 1992, he staged Gjergj Fishta’s comedy “Gomari i Baba Tasit” with the “Migjeni” Theatre ensemble. In addition, he wrote several stage plays. Among them, the drama “A Simple Story” stands out. After 2000, one of his most noted productions was “The Morning Star”.

Through decades of work, Mëhilli left a lasting mark on Albanian theatre and humour. Consequently, his name remains a reference point for younger generations of artists.

He also appeared in a small role in the film “The Militant”.

Homage ceremonies for Edmond Mëhilli will take place on January 10, from 09:00 to 12:00, in the lobby of the “Migjeni” Theatre.

In an official statement, the Theatre expressed its deepest condolences to his family and to the artistic community.
