Begaj: Congress of Lushnja shaped Albania into a modern and sovereign state

President Bajram Begaj marked the 106th anniversary of the Congress of Lushnjë, calling it a decisive moment for Albania’s existence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
He noted that, during a critical time for the young Albanian state, representatives from all regions and faiths gathered in Lushnjë to defend the nation’s independence and unity.
“106 years ago, in a crucial moment for the new Albanian state, representatives from every region and faith met in Lushnjë to protect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Begaj wrote on social media.
He added that the Congress of Lushnjë showed the political maturity of the Albanian people. They rose above division and took control of their own future. The Congress rebuilt democratic institutions challenged by anarchy and war. It also gave Albania the form of a modern and sovereign state.
The President paid tribute to the patriots and statesmen who participated in the Congress. He honored their role in confirming the birth of modern Albania.
The Congress of Lushnjë, held from January 21 to 31, 1920, remains one of the key events in Albania’s history. At that time, Albania faced the threat of territorial division after World War I. Therefore, dozens of delegates from across the country gathered in Lushnjë to form a national congress.
On the final day, the Congress appointed Sulejman Delvina as Prime Minister and selected the members of the Senate. Prominent figures such as Aqif Pashë Elbasani, Shefqet Daiu, Ahmet Zogolli, and Mytezim Këlliçi took part.
In addition, the Congress established Albania’s highest state bodies. The High Council, composed of four members, jointly served as head of state. The National Council, with 37 representatives, performed the duties of the Albanian Parliament.
