On January 26, 2014, Laver Bariu, legend of southern Albanian polyphony and clarinet, passed away.

Born in Përmet in 1926, Bariu grew up in a musical family. His father and local musicians influenced him. He also learned from the saz players of Leskovik.

Bariu became a clarinetist, singer, and founder of the Përmet ensemble. He earned the title People’s Artist.

He performed at all Gjirokastër Folklore Festivals, other national events, and international tours.
He recorded music at RTSH and accompanied famous folk singers.

He collaborated with Albanian and foreign researchers on several CDs.
Bariu also contributed music to films from Kinostudio “Shqipëria e Re,” including Gjeneral Gramafoni (1977) and Këngët e Zemrës (1989).

He received the Order “Master of Labor” for his contributions to Albanian music.
