Collection expansion and stronger restoration capacity mark a new approach at the National Gallery of Arts

First, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports Blendi Gonxhja presented the strategic report for the National Gallery of Arts. He did so during a working meeting with the MAXXI Museum team.

Next, based on the memorandum of cooperation signed in Rome between the MAXXI Foundation and Albania’s National Gallery of Arts, the two institutions will establish an independent three-year partnership for 2025–2028.

Moreover, the report identifies key institutional challenges. It analyzes contemporary governance and management models. It then proposes a new organizational structure. In addition, it sets out a financial model to ensure long-term sustainability. According to Minister Gonxhja, the process will continue with staff training programs and the development of cultural initiatives. As a result, these measures will strengthen institutional capacity and increase the Gallery’s public impact.

At the same time, the National Gallery of Arts will adopt a new and inclusive approach to its artistic and institutional development. Specifically, this approach will focus on expanding the collection through new acquisition and commissioning policies. Furthermore, it will strengthen restoration and conservation capacities. It will also develop contemporary curatorial programs and broaden international cooperation with museums and cultural networks.

Meanwhile, the strategy will place special emphasis on educating younger generations. It will achieve this through educational programs, cultural mediation, and active engagement with young audiences. Consequently, the Gallery will evolve into a dynamic space for learning, dialogue, and creativity.

Finally, through this partnership, Albania gains long-term expertise from a leading institution in contemporary art and architecture. This expertise comes from the MAXXI Foundation, the National Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome.
