Honoring Pajaziti, Zejnullahu, and Hoxha: KLA and the heroic fight for Kosova’s freedom

TIRANA, February 2 – Kosova commemorated Zahir Pajaziti, Hakif Zejnullahu, and Edmond Hoxha in a solemn ceremony in Podujeva. State leaders, local officials, families of the fallen, and citizens gathered to mark the 29th anniversary of their deaths. This event, known as the ‘January Trinomial,’ highlights Kosova’s shift from passive political resistance to armed struggle that ultimately led to liberation.

Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti praised the Trinomial’s role in securing Kosova’s freedom. He said Pajaziti and his comrades were visionaries who recognized that liberty required bold action against a ruthless aggressor. Consequently, their military and political organization gave the Kosova Liberation Army legitimacy before the international community.

Kurti further explained that since Albania’s creation in 1912, Kosova’s people pursued two paths: political engagement and armed struggle. Both paths produced leaders who shaped history through deeds and sacrifice. Therefore, the dedication of these figures ensured that the fight for national freedom remained unwavering.

Podujeva Mayor Shpejtim Bulliqi emphasized the importance of institutional memory. He argued that January 31 is more than a date; it is a day for reflection and responsibility. Because Kosova’s freedom rests on the blood of its martyrs, every step in building the state must honor the ideals for which they sacrificed.

Bulliqi continued by noting that Pajaziti, Zejnullahu, and Hoxha became symbols of resistance and armed organization. As a result, their heroism inspired thousands to join the KLA and demonstrated that the spirit of freedom cannot be extinguished.

Bajram Pajaziti, brother of Zahir Pajaziti, spoke on behalf of the families. He connected the KLA’s struggle to Albania’s historic resistance from Skanderbeg onward. He added that these heroes paved the way for liberation, inspired guerrilla groups, and became enduring symbols of courage for future generations.

The ceremony concluded with songs and recitations that evoked the warriors’ spirit and love for the homeland. In this way, the ‘January Trinomial’ continues to inspire Kosova’s leaders and citizens, guiding them toward a stronger rule-of-law state and Euro-Atlantic integration.

The three heroes fell in an ambush by Serbian forces on January 31, 1997, in Pestova, Vushtrri.
