Bashkim Kozeli stands as a major figure in Albanian drama. He shaped creative thought with consistency and depth.

For his contribution to literature and culture, the state honored him. He received the Silver “Naim Frashëri” Order, one of Albania’s highest cultural awards.

Kozeli was born in 1942 in Kolonjë, Korçë. From 1959 to 1961, he studied aviation in Rostov, in the former Soviet Union. However, health issues forced him to leave aviation.

After that, he built a strong career in military and cultural life. First, he taught at the Aviation School in Vlora. Then, he led the House of Culture for Military Personnel in Vlora. Later, he headed cultural affairs at the Fier Military Corps.

In the late 1960s, his plays reached the stage. “Shokët” (1968) premiered at the “Petro Marko” Theatre in Vlora. A year later, it reached the National Theatre. Soon after, “Sinjali i kuq” appeared in Vlora in 1971 and on the national stage in 1973.

In the 1980s, Kozeli’s voice grew more mature. He explored human fate more deeply. “Lidhur si fishekë gjerdani” (1980) premiered in Vlora under the direction of Pjetër Gjoka. Renowned actors such as Kadri Roshi and Agim Shuke brought it to life. As a result, text and performance became one.

Then came “Troket historia” (1981) in Korça and “Pyesni malet” (1982) in Gjirokastra. These works deepened the dialogue between drama and collective memory. Later, “Buzëqeshjet e një mbrëmjeje” (1985) revealed a more sensitive side of the author. Decades later, “Si rruar qethur” (2007) in Fier proved that his voice transcended time.

His later peaks focused on history as living presence. “Ëndrra e Ismail Qemalit” (2012) premiered at the National Theatre. “Nënë Tereza kur ishte Gonxhe” (2016) followed in Shkodra. In these works, Kozeli gave the stage not only characters, but souls.

Some of his plays never reached the public. Authorities banned them during the period.

Because of political persecution linked to his family, Kozeli’s creative work was interrupted. He was sent to a remote anti-aircraft unit, far from Vlora and the theatre. There, creativity survived in silence.

Yet Kozeli also wrote for film and television. His works include “Në emër të lirisë” (1987), directed by Fehmi Hoshafi; “Pas takimit të fundit” (1989), also with Hoshafi; “Dhimbja e dashurisë” (2008), a 10-episode TV series directed by Ylli Pepo; and “Pleqtë e hashashit” (2010), directed by Juli Xhokaxhi.

From 1992 to 2001, he served as Director of Culture and Press at the Ministry of Defense. During this time, he strengthened cultural life within military institutions.

Finally, for his lasting impact on southern Albania’s cultural life, the Vlora Regional Council honored him. It awarded him the title “Distinguished Personality of Vlora Region.”
