“Albanian Language Primer”, Sami Frashëri’s book that served as the first Albanian grammar

TIRANA, February 3-The National Historical Museum presents rare artifacts through its series “Relics that Tell Stories.” The series highlights objects from the museum’s collection and explains their history.

One key artifact is the book “Albanian Language Primer.” Sami Frashëri published it in Bucharest in 1886. The patriotic society “Dëshira” supported the edition. The work served as the first systematic grammar of the Albanian language.

The 128-page volume measures 173×117 mm. It aimed to organize rules of writing and speaking. At that time, Albanian still lacked a unified educational standard.

The museum displayed the book in the National Renaissance Pavilion. It stood as material evidence of a historic moment. It documented the period when Albanians began to write their language with shared rules.

The book opens with the alphabet. Frashëri explains the Istanbul graphic system and the correct pronunciation of sounds. The central section studies morphology. It classifies parts of speech such as nouns, adjectives, and pronouns. It gives detailed attention to verb conjugation. Frashëri sets rules for noun declension and verb tenses. He tries to find balance between Albanian dialects.

In the final section, Frashëri discusses syntax. He explains sentence structure and logical connections between words. The book also includes guidance on punctuation and spelling. These rules supported the Albanian schools that opened during that period.
