Premiere of documentary “Nuse” highlights women’s singing of Zadrima

“Nuse” is a new documentary that brings the women’s singing of Zadrima to the cinema screen. The film presents this tradition as memory and cultural resistance.

Composer Robert Bisha created the documentary. He also composed the original music using electroacoustic techniques.

The film acts as a protest against dictatorships that erase identity. It criticises systems that appropriate and silence cultural memory.

The author gives the work an ethnomusicological, artisanal, political, and historical dimension. He recalls the memory of transition.

“Nuse” does not follow one specific ritual event. Instead, it reflects the archetype of ritual expressed through bridal songs. Women’s voices carry rich but simple monodic lines. The songs recount lived historical moments. The texts often sound poetic and mystical. The Gheg dialect adds rhythmic richness, melisma, and structural minimalism. Together, these elements create a gentle narrative flow.

The documentary screens tonight at the Agimi Art Centre. The Swiss Cultural Fund supports the film. The fund is a project of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and is implemented by the Centre for Business, Technology and Leadership.
