Rama: “Zoja e Këshillit të Mirë” Basilica, a treasure of Albanian spiritual heritage

Prime Minister Edi Rama visited the Basilica of “Zoja e Këshillit të Mirë” in the Vatican, which houses the Virgin Mary image from Shkodra, removed in 1467.
During the visit, he invited Pope Francis to Albania for the 130th anniversary of the declaration of “Zoja e Këshillit të Mirë” by Pope Leo XIII, Albania’s patron saint.
Rama emphasized that no Albanian head of state or government had entered this basilica before. Moreover, he highlighted its historical and spiritual importance.
The basilica, under the care of the Augustinian Order, also connects to Pope Leo XIV. Rama recalled that the Pope’s first visit after his election included prayer before the Shkodra image.
Additionally, Rama met Cardinal Pietro Parolin, praising him as an expert in world affairs and a devoted friend of Albania.
Overall, Rama said the visit strengthened Albania’s spiritual and cultural ties with the Vatican and showcased the basilica as a symbol of national pride.
