PM Rama: Hague request for Thaçi and former Kosova Liberation Army leaders is unprecedented and requires careful review

TIRANA, February 16 – Prime Minister Edi Rama commented on the Hague prosecutor’s request to sentence former Kosova President Hashim Thaçi and three other Kosova Liberation Army leaders: Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi, and Rexhep Selimi. The request proposes forty-five years in prison for each of them.
In the feature “Weekly Notes” on his weekly podcast “Let’s Talk,” Rama described the request as serious and unprecedented. He said he needed time to consider its implications for Kosova and its citizens.
Rama noted that the prosecutor’s case relies on allegations of crimes against humanity and war crimes during 1998–1999. He emphasized that no final judgments have been issued, and the legal process must provide clear evidence.
He highlighted that international law requires proof before assigning responsibility. Leadership roles alone do not determine criminal liability.
Rama also addressed the importance of international cooperation in legal processes. He stressed the need for transparent procedures.
The Prime Minister called for careful examination of the case. He emphasized respect for due process and the rule of law in evaluating historical events.
