Kosova faces possible early elections with six days remaining to elect president

TIRANA, February 27 – Kosova has six working days left to elect a new president. Political parties have not presented any official candidates or reached an agreement. Prime Minister Albin Kurti said he is making every effort to avoid early elections, which will become necessary if the new president is not elected by the deadline. So far, discussions focus on the need for a consensus figure, without naming a specific individual.
The current President, Vjosa Osmani, will end her term on April 4. The constitutional deadline for electing the new president is March 4. If parties fail to elect a president by that date, Kosova must hold new parliamentary elections within 45 days.
Recent meetings between party leaders have not produced concrete results. Observers note that the situation remains uncertain regarding potential candidates and political agreements.
Earlier, Foreign Minister Glauk Konjufca mentioned a possible candidacy from the Jashari family to secure broad consensus. The family denied any interest in the position.
Opposition parties said the next president must be a figure with a strong reputation, proven integrity, and significant intellectual contributions, both domestically and internationally.
Arian Tahiri, Parliamentary Group Leader of the Democratic Party of Kosova, said his party is ready to propose a candidate. He added that the party remains open to discussions about the qualifications the next president should meet.
Meanwhile, the Democratic League of Kosova said the party that won the elections has the responsibility to lead the process. Member of Parliament Kujtim Shala noted that no internal discussions have taken place regarding specific candidates.
At the same time, the Self-Determination Movement has not publicly commented on potential presidential candidates.
