Kanina Castle to offer improved experience for visitors

TIRANA, March 9 – Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports Blendi Gonxhja observed the progress of works at Kanina Castle.
Workers continue conservation, structural, and geological interventions at the site. The project also includes interpretation plans and improvements to the visitor experience.
Gonxhja visited the site over the past weekend with the Albanian Development Fund. The team reviewed the progress of the works, which have advanced significantly.
The minister said the project also includes cooperation with CHwB Albania. He explained that the initiative aims to preserve the historic structures of the castle and improve infrastructure and visitor services.
Kanina Castle stands 6 km from the city of Vlora on a hill 380 meters above sea level. Its surrounding wall stretches about 1 km and covers an area of 3.5 hectares.
Historians believe builders constructed the fortress around the 4th century BC. The fortification system shows several construction phases from the ancient period and the medieval era, including Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman periods.
