After-school programs in Albania aim to boost social, civic and creative development

TIRANA, March 19 – The Ministry of Education and the British Council held a conference on after-school education in Albania. They presented policies, standards, and models for inclusive development. Education Minister Mirela Kumbaro outlined the ministry’s vision for structured after-school programs. The programs now operate under a legal framework passed by parliament.

Kumbaro said the programs should move beyond pilot projects or individual school initiatives. They aim to complement formal education. They offer students opportunities to develop 21st-century skills. They aim to reach all pre-university students across the country. The initiative integrates international best practices. It includes the successful “Schools of the 21st Century” model.

After-school programs provide safe and inspiring spaces. Students can explore talents, acquire new skills, and build social and civic awareness. Programs unify fragmented initiatives and create structured opportunities. They include arts, crafts, environmental projects, and community-centered activities.

Teachers, local professionals, and community members play a central role. The ministry is introducing payment schemes for teachers. The British Council supports teacher training and capacity-building. A school competition produced the official program logo. Students participate in shaping the program and its identity. These programs aim to transform after-school education into a national standard.
