“Law on paper, discrimination in practice”: Albanian students protest in Skopje to protect Albanian

Albanian students in North Macedonia started a protest. Authorities do not allow them to take the jurisprudence exam in their mother tongue, Albanian.
Students placed banners in central Skopje. The banners demanded their rights.
“Law on paper, discrimination in practice,” read one banner. Many students and citizens attended the protest.
Albanian students gathered in front of the Ministry of Justice. They called for permission to take the jurisprudence exam in Albanian, as the law provides.
This exam is required to work as a lawyer, judge, or prosecutor. In practice, institutions mostly conduct it in Macedonian, even though Albanian has official legal status.
Students argue this situation creates barriers and inequality. It limits professional opportunities and affects Albanian representation in the judicial system.
They demand the exam be fully held in Albanian. They also request equal procedures for all candidates and real implementation of language rights guaranteed by law.
