The Swiss Embassy has opened a rare photo exhibition in Shkodër featuring the work of Swiss academic Eugène Pittard. The collection returns to the public after 100 years and includes photographs taken during his travels in Albania in 1921 and 1924.

The exhibition, titled “Albania 1921 – Eugène Pittard,” opened in Shkodër, the city where Pittard first began exploring Albania during his 1910 visit.

Swiss Ambassador Ruth Huber said she is proud to present the exhibition and highlighted Pittard’s contribution to the visibility and dignity of Albania at a time when international attention was crucial. She said his work reflects shared values such as openness, human connection, and cultural dialogue.

The exhibition includes rare and previously unpublished printed photographs, as well as digital content with animations, slides, and virtual reality experiences. These elements aim to engage visitors of all ages and promote awareness of Albania’s historical heritage.

Curator Elton Koritari said Pittard’s work should inspire modern photographers and artists to document the country today as he did more than a century ago.

Eugène Pittard was a strong supporter of Albania. He advised U.S. President Woodrow Wilson and advocated for Albania’s sovereignty and international recognition, which led to its admission to the League of Nations in 1920. He also founded the Albanian Red Cross.

His photographs show everyday life in Albania during the early 1920s, focusing on ordinary people. The collection provides a visual record of the newly formed Albanian state and contributes to national memory and identity.

The exhibition will remain open in Shkodër until May 7 and will continue in Durrës and Korçë until June 2026.
