PM Rama links EU accession talks to anniversary of Albanian national poet Naim Frashëri

TIRANA, May 25 – Prime Minister Edi Rama linked Albania’s European Union integration process to the 180th anniversary of the birth of Albanian Renaissance poet Naim Frashëri.
In a Facebook message, Rama described as a “joyful mystery” the coincidence between the EU’s green light for the closing phase of accession negotiations and the anniversary of Frashëri’s birth. He referred to the poet as a “genius guide” of Albanians’ long-standing European aspiration.
The prime minister also recalled Frashëri’s expression “the sun that rises where it sets”. Meanwhile, he described the poet as a key figure in Albania’s national awakening.
Rama said Albania aimed to complete its European integration by 2030, which marks the 130th anniversary of Frashëri’s death. He added that “Albania 2030” would become the “European Year of Naim”.
In addition, the prime minister referred to writer Faik Konica, who once said only 300 Albanians attended Frashëri’s funeral. Rama said a united Albania within the European family would commemorate the poet nationwide in 2030.
