Religious leaders in Kosova call for respect during election campaign

TIRANA, May 29 – Leaders of five religious communities in Kosova issued a joint declaration. They called for respect, responsibility and social peace during the election period. They signed the statement as representatives of the Islamic Community of Kosova, the Serbian Orthodox Church, the Catholic Church, the Evangelical Protestant Church and the Jewish Community. They stressed democratic values and a responsible public climate.

Religious leaders in Kosova urged respectful language in public debate. They rejected insults, humiliation and personal attacks. In addition, they called for full respect for women and girls and condemned sexist language and harmful gender stereotypes. They also called for rejection of hate speech, threats and incitement to violence. At the same time, they stressed respect for ethnic, religious and social diversity.

Furthermore, the leaders highlighted honesty and accuracy in public communication. They called for action against disinformation and manipulation. They also urged respect for laws and democratic standards, alongside ethical behaviour in media and social networks. They focused on preventing bullying, online abuse and degrading language.

The statement said words shape behaviour and social cohesion. It added that words can divide or unite society. The leaders called on all public actors to choose respect, truth and responsibility.
