Kurti: Kosovo Needs State Strategy to Respond Effectively to Hague Verdict

Prime Minister Albin Kurti said the Government of Kosovo remains committed to supporting efforts to challenge the verdict issued by the Kosovo Specialist Chambers against former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) leaders.

Speaking during his visit to the United States, Kurti said the government would use all available means to support the appeals process. He described the verdict as legally and morally unjust and historically and factually inaccurate.

“An agreement on a state strategy is necessary to ensure an appropriate and effective response to the first-instance verdict. The strategy should support the defense teams during the appeals process and strengthen diplomatic efforts,” Kurti wrote on Facebook.

Meanwhile, Kurti said Kosovo would work closely with its international allies. He also said the government would continue to defend the country’s liberation war against what he called Serbian propaganda.

At the same time, Kurti said Kosovo would work to shed light on massacres and other crimes committed by Serbia in Kosovo. He argued that Serbian authorities continue to conceal these crimes more than 27 years after the war ended.

During his first day in New York, Kurti also met with young members of the Albanian diaspora in the United States. The event, titled “Between Here and Home,” was organized by three Albanian-American youth groups: ZANI, F’Oda and the Columbia University Albanian Society.

During the discussion, Kurti addressed several issues, including economic growth and employment. He cited economic growth of 5.4% in the first quarter of this year and a decline in unemployment from 26% to 10% during his government’s tenure.

He also highlighted the need to further improve the integrity and performance of Kosovo’s justice system. According to Kurti, international reports, including the European Commission’s reports, continue to raise concerns about the system.

Finally, Kurti called on young people to contribute to gender equality. He also urged them to strengthen cooperation among Albanians across the Western Balkans and around the world.
