British daily The Sun highlights Butrint, Saranda and southern Albania in a travel report by journalist Nigel Thompson. Thompson travelled from Corfu to southern Albania on a day trip that cost £77 per person. The trip focused on the country’s beaches, historical heritage and natural landscapes.

The excursion began at 7:30 in the morning with a bus ride to the port. After about 75 minutes by ferry, the group reached Saranda. The itinerary then continued to the Butrint archaeological site. Thompson said the visit revealed a history stretching back thousands of years. The site includes an ancient forum, amphitheatre, public baths, aqueduct and city walls. UNESCO lists Butrint as a World Heritage Site.

Meanwhile, the trip continued through Butrint National Park. The report explains that Butrint Lake is actually a lagoon connected to the sea by a channel about 2.6 kilometres long. The area supports diverse wildlife and bird species. Thompson also visited Lëkurës Castle, which stands on a hill about 245 metres high and offers views of Saranda and the surrounding coast.

The day ended with free time at a seaside bar before the group returned to Corfu. Thompson described the excursion as a long day of more than 12 hours. However, he said the experience offered an interesting way to discover Albania and said he would consider a longer holiday in the country.
