Academician Nazim Gruda won unanimous support to become President of the Union of European Academies for Sciences Applied to Agriculture, Food and Nature (UEAA), bringing the organization’s presidency to Albania for the next two years.

On September 21, the Academy of Sciences of Albania hosted the 13th UEAA General Assembly and a meeting of the Steering Committee in Tirana.

Meanwhile, the Academy organized an international scientific symposium titled “Sustainable European Agriculture and Balanced Management of Natural Resources.” Academicians, professors and experts from Albania, France, Italy, Bulgaria, Latvia, Romania, Sweden and other countries attended the event.

During the symposium, participants examined key issues related to sustainable agriculture. They also discussed the latest developments in gene-editing technologies in agriculture across European Union countries.

After the scientific sessions, the General Assembly reviewed institutional reports, discussed strategic priorities and elected the organization’s leadership for the 2026–2028 mandate.

As a result, delegates elected Gruda as president and Prof. Simone Orlandini of Italy’s Accademia dei Georgofili as vice president. In addition, the Assembly selected 12 members of the Steering Committee and seven observer members from European academies, including a representative of the Kosovo Academy of Sciences and Arts.

On the second day of the program, participants will visit the Agricultural University of Tirana, the Agricultural Technology Transfer Center in Lushnjë and several farms in the region. They will also attend research presentations and take part in a cultural visit to Ardenica.
