The Albanian-American Development Foundation (AADF) has launched PENA – Press Education & Newsroom Access, a new fellowship programme for young Albanian journalists.

The foundation presented the programme at Tirana’s Pyramid, bringing together representatives of the media and journalism community.

At the event, AADF Executive Director Martin Mata outlined the initiative’s vision. He stressed the importance of investing in the next generation of journalists. He also highlighted AADF’s experience with fellowship programmes such as LEAD Albania and MIP.

Meanwhile, journalist Robert Rakipllari highlighted the value of such programmes. He focused on professional growth, exposure to new practices and stronger journalism standards.

Furthermore, AADF Project Manager Alda Shabani presented PENA’s three main components: professional training, a three-month fellowship in the United States and an individual journalism project. Participants will also receive mentoring throughout the nine-month programme.

First, from January to March, participants will complete 48 hours of advanced training. The programme will cover journalism ethics, investigative methods and journalism in the age of artificial intelligence. Local and international experts will lead the sessions.

Next, from April to June, participants will join established US media outlets for a three-month fellowship. They will gain newsroom experience and build international professional networks. AADF will provide financial support to selected participants.

Finally, from July to September, participants will develop individual journalism projects based on their professional interests. They will receive microgrants for research, while the final projects will strengthen their professional portfolios.

Overall, the programme targets young journalists with professional potential, curiosity and a strong interest in development. It aims to help them turn new ideas into concrete results.

Applications opened on Sept. 21 and will close on Nov. 1, 2026.

To qualify, applicants must be Albanian citizens aged 22–32. They must hold a university degree and have at least two years of professional journalism experience. In addition, they must have strong English skills and submit journalism samples produced over the past two years.
