The Ancient Amphitheatre of Durrës has entered a new phase of conservation and archaeological research as authorities step up efforts to preserve one of Albania’s most important cultural heritage sites.

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports Blendi Gonxhja announced the start of the Conservation and Archaeological Excavation Plan, an initiative funded by the ministry. Conservation teams have already begun work at the monument.

Meanwhile, research continues under the Italian-Albanian project “Medieval Durrës – The Amphitheatre,” which has been providing new insights into the history of the site since 2018.

On Albania’s National Cultural Heritage Day, Gonxhja also highlighted growing public interest in the amphitheatre. From January to August 2026, the site welcomed 28,823 visitors, an increase of about 16.3 percent compared with the same period last year.

More than six decades after its discovery, efforts to study, protect and preserve the Durrës Amphitheatre continue, ensuring that this important cultural treasure is passed on to future generations.
