Work has begun on one of the key projects for the development of the Bylis–Klos Archaeological Park.

The European Union is providing €6.25 million for the project. It aims to protect cultural heritage and boost tourism in the Mallakastër area. Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports Blendi Gonxhja announced the project. He visited the site with EU Ambassador to Albania Sofia Moreira de Sousa, AICS representatives and local authorities.

Gonxhja said the project will combine the protection of archaeological heritage with tourism development and support for the local community. It will also make Bylis and the surrounding area more accessible and attractive to visitors. Around €2 million of the investment will fund a new Multifunctional Visitors’ Centre. The facility will include a museum, research areas and spaces for the conservation of archaeological artefacts.

The project will also conserve several archaeological monuments. Work has already started at five sites, with 11 archaeologists currently working on the ground. Another part of the project focuses on the local community and tourism development. So far, authorities have certified 13 local guides.

The project also includes €210,000 in grants for 20 beneficiaries. The funding aims to create new economic opportunities for residents in the area.
