Restoration Work Begins at Selca Monumental Tombs

Specialists from the Korçë Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage have started maintenance work at the Monumental Tombs of Lower Selca. They are replacing and restoring the protective shelters over the ancient tombs to shield the structures from weather damage and preserve the site.

The tombs stand in the Mokër area, about 40 kilometers from Pogradec. The site links to the ancient Illyrian city of Pelion and includes five monumental tombs, four carved directly into the rock. Archaeologists date them mainly from the late 4th to the 2nd century BC.

The tombs offer valuable evidence of Illyrian architecture, art, burial rituals and social life. Albania has also included Lower Selca among its proposed UNESCO heritage sites.
