Tirana Exhibition Highlights Albania’s Role in Saving Jews During the Holocaust

Albania’s Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs presented Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and his delegation with historical and archival documents documenting Albanians’ efforts to protect and save Jews during the Holocaust.

The exhibition featured official correspondence, travel documents and diplomatic records that shed light on acts of courage, solidarity and humanity during one of history’s darkest periods. Foreign Minister Ferit Hoxha and Sa’ar examined documents showing how Albanian officials and diplomats helped Jews fleeing Nazi persecution, including those living in Albania and others seeking refuge in the country.

Behind every passport, visa, official letter and carefully crafted false identity lay a human life and the hope of survival. Albania became a safe haven for Jews during the Holocaust, reflecting the country’s tradition of Besa, its code of honour and hospitality.

The two ministers also visited the “Tree of Remembrance,” planted on Holocaust Remembrance Day as a symbol of memory, responsibility and friendship. The olive tree carries messages from students of Tirana’s Sami Frashëri High School and Berlin’s Refik Veseli School.

The ministry said Albania’s legacy of choosing humanity over indifference continues to inspire younger generations and strengthen the lasting friendship and partnership between Albania and Israel.
