A rare epigraph is exhibited where Shkodra is mentioned for the first time

The restorers have reproduced the rare epigraph where the name of Shkodra is mentioned for the first time. The original inscription belonging to the 3rd century AD is found in the depths of a well, while its copy is exhibited in the Rozafa Castle Museum.
“To the son of Caluis, who performed military service having the functions of optio primilipilarioum, with the title of patriot, the majestic council of the city of the Shkodran colony, placed this monument.”
The copy of a rare epigraph, in Latin script dating back to the 3rd century AD is exhibited in the Rozafa Castle museum. The epigraph was discovered on the medieval stela (inscribed stone slab or pillar used for commemorative purpose) of the castle, in 2011 by the Albanian-Polish archaeological mission.
To this day, the original inscription is located on the walls of the fort, at a depth of 5 meters. Because it is not accessible to the public, restorers have made it possible to reproduce and place it in the museum.
The Albanian-Polish mission, during the years 2011-2017, researched the traces of ancient Shkodra, bringing to light important discoveries and artifacts on the extent of the city, its urbanization, the defense system of the city in its lower part.
