Abdyl Frashëri, the prominent ideologue and patriot of the National Renaissance

On August 29, 1839, in Frashër of Përmet, Abdyl Frashëri was born, becoming one of the most important figures of the National Renaissance. He emerged as a prominent political personality during the 19th-century Eastern Crisis.

In 1877, he entered the First Ottoman Parliament as a deputy from Ioannina. He elected chairman of the Ioannina Committee in the same year and later, in December, assumed the role of chairman of the Istanbul Committee. This committee safeguarded the rights of Albanians within the Ottoman Empire.

Abdyl Frashëri played a significant role as one of the key activists in the Assembly of Prizren. This assembly was established with the aim of safeguarding Albanian territories, which had been fragmented due to the Treaty of San Stefano (1878). Frashëri strongly advocated for the unification of Albanian territories into a single vilayet under the Ottoman Empire.

During the Congress of Berlin, he, along with Mehmet Ali Vrioni, represented the League and engaged in meetings with delegates from the Great Powers, working to safeguard the rights of Albanians.

In the government led by Ymer Prizreni in 1881, Abdyl Frashëri took on the role of Minister of Foreign Affairs. However, he was arrested in April of the same year. Following his arrest, he underwent a trial in Prizren during which he was initially condemned to death. However, this sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment. After serving a three-year term in the fortress prison of Prizren, he was subsequently relocated to Ballëkesir and Bandërma, where he was subjected to forced residence. In 1886, he was released under the condition that he refrain from engaging in political activities. He was also appointed as a member of the Istanbul city council.

On October 11, 1892, he passed away in Istanbul.
