Academy of Sciences delivers the Comprehensive Albanian Language Dictionary

TIRANA, December 30 – The leadership of the Academy of Sciences delivers the “Comprehensive Albanian Language Dictionary,” marking the completion of a 5-year project covering the period 2021–2025.
The Academy explains that the dictionary includes more than 125,000 lexicographic units. These consist of about 105,000 main word entries. In addition, the work contains around 3,500 hidden words, 12,500 phraseological units, and about 5,000 terminological compounds. It also includes roughly 1,200 abbreviated names, 250 non-assimilated loanwords, and around 1,650 foreign expressions. Moreover, the dictionary records about 250,000 lexical meanings with more than 1,000,000 illustrative examples.
According to the Academy, the dictionary responds to long-standing demand for a comprehensive Albanian lexicographic work.
During a ceremony organized by the Academy of Sciences, the team presents the dictionary as a printed mock-up in a single copy. The editors bind the work in three volumes, each containing about 3,300 A4 pages. At the same time, the Academy receives a symbolic electronic version on CD.
Academy Chair Skënder Gjinushi praises the contribution of all participants involved in the project. He highlights the work of collaborators, authors, editors, editorial board members, proofreaders, and support staff. Meanwhile, Vice Chair Vasil Tole and other academics also assess the project positively.
At the beginning of 2026, the Academy plans to publish the dictionary online. As a result, a team of lexicographers at the Center for Encyclopedic and Albanological Publications will carry out updates, unifications, additions, and revisions.
