Additional NATO troops arrive in Kosova

NATO has announced that KFOR reinforcements have begun to arrive in Kosova.

NATO reinforcements have started arriving in Kosova after last week’s violence where 30 KFOR peacekeeping troops were injured. About 500 members of the Turkish service from the battalion of the 65th Mechanized Infantry Brigade make up the bulk of the NATO reinforcements, the Alliance announced.

In Zveçan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviç, Serbs are protesting against the entry of new Albanian mayors into municipal facilities, and the presence of Kosova Police. As a result of the protesters’ actions, several policemen and KFOR members were injured. Also, vehicles of the Kosova Police and the media were burned and damaged.

The situation in these municipalities became tense on Friday, May 26, when the sworn mayors had to enter their work offices under the assistance of the Police.

This action of Kosova’s institutions has been criticized by the United States and the European Union until they demanded an immediate de-escalation of tensions in the north of Mitrovica.

Last week, international representatives asked Kosova to organize early elections in the four municipalities.
