Environment Minister Sofjan Jaupaj met European Commissioner for Environment Jessika Roswall as Albania marked one year since it opened negotiations on Chapter 27, covering environment and climate change.

In a video message on social media, Jaupaj said Albania remains committed to meeting European environmental standards. He presented the work carried out over the past year by a joint team involving institutions that contribute to the chapter. Jaupaj said the country had made progress on several criteria for the chapter’s closing benchmarks.

Meanwhile, Jaupaj said he and Commissioner Roswall agreed on a specific working approach for Albania. He said the approach would accelerate the approval of legislation needed to meet the closing benchmarks. He added that Albania aims to complete the process and close Chapter 27 in 2027. Jaupaj also thanked the Ministry of Environment team and subordinate institutions for their work and commitment.

Albania continues work to meet European standards on the environment and climate change. The European Union’s environmental policy promotes sustainable development and environmental protection. The acquis covers more than 200 key legal acts on water and air quality, waste management, nature protection, industrial pollution, chemicals, genetically modified organisms, noise and forestry.
