Albania and Ukraine Sign Historic Agreement to Enrich Archives

The General Directorate of Archives (DPA) has announced a significant milestone in its efforts to preserve Albania’s historical legacy. After acquiring hundreds of documents illuminating the activities of the Albanian diaspora in Ukraine, a cooperation agreement was signed today between the Director General of Archives, Ardit Bido, and the head of the State Archival Service of Ukraine, Anatolii Khromov.
This agreement marks a pivotal moment in the collaboration between the two nations, aiming to repatriate invaluable documents regarding the activities of Albanian patriots in Odesa during the National Renaissance period.
During a joint press conference following the agreement signing, Bido emphasized the importance of this bilateral accord, stating, “Under this agreement, our archives will collaborate through joint exhibitions, participation in scientific and professional conferences, as well as the publication of joint collections of documents.” This commitment signifies a deepening of cultural ties and mutual respect for each other’s historical narratives.
The documents set to be exchanged shed light primarily on the pivotal role played by the Albanian diaspora in Odesa during a transformative period in Albania’s history. Bido, speaking passionately about the significance of this agreement, noted, “Ukraine has been a center during our National Renaissance. Our patriots carried out various activities there. Moreover, there are several Albanian settlements in Ukraine that have preserved Albanian language, tradition, and customs.”
Khromov, expressing his appreciation for the collaboration, stated, “It is a significant day for us because it is only the first step in our cooperation. Our countries have similar visions for the development of archival systems.” This sentiment reflects the mutual understanding and shared commitment to preserving historical heritage for future generations.
The bilateral agreement not only facilitates the exchange of valuable historical documents but also fosters the exchange of expertise and human resources between the two archival institutions. Through joint research and study of archival materials, both parties aim to deepen their understanding of shared history and cultural heritage.
Furthermore, this agreement is motivated by the aspiration for ongoing collaboration between the two sister archival institutions. Beyond the immediate exchange of documents, both parties commit to organizing joint exhibitions, participating in academic conferences, and collaborating on future publications.
The implementation of this cooperation with the Ukrainian archive coincides with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the DPA. In a series of celebratory events planned throughout the year, leaders from both archives will come together to commemorate this milestone and discuss avenues for further collaboration.
Overall, this agreement symbolizes a commitment to mutual understanding, historical preservation, and cultural exchange between Albania and Ukraine. As the Central State Archive intensifies efforts to enrich its collections with original documents from around the world, this collaboration sets a precedent for future endeavors in archival cooperation on a global scale.
