Albanian and Italian archaeologists continue excavations at Durrës Amphitheatre

Albanian and Italian archaeologists have continued excavations at the Ancient Amphitheatre of Durrës for three weeks. The work forms part of the joint “Medieval Durrës” archaeological expedition. Researchers are studying how the monument changed from Late Antiquity through the early medieval period.

Three galleries in the southern section of the amphitheatre are the main focus of the current work. Archaeologist Elvana Metalla says the team is examining different medieval phases in the galleries. Evidence from Late Antiquity has also emerged in the lower layers.

Meanwhile, the excavations aim to reconstruct the monument’s different stages of development. Researchers are also examining their links to the history of Durrës. The Albanian-Italian archaeological cooperation began in 2004. Albanian and Italian students also take part in excavations and document the findings.

The expedition will continue work in the amphitheatre’s galleries, where archaeologists hope to uncover further evidence about the history of the monument and the city of Durrës.
