Gjon Simoni is a well-known Albanian composer. He was born in Shkodër on February 8, 1936, into a family with traditions in Albanian culture. He became involved in the music life of his hometown at a young age, contributing as an organist in the Catholic church, a role he later continued in Tirana.

From 1962 to 1966, he pursued higher studies at the State Conservatory of Tirana (now the Academy of Arts) in Composition and Music Theory, graduating with excellent marks. He was appointed in Gjirokastër, where he worked from 1966 to 1969 as the head of music. Later, he worked as an editor of music programs until 1980. In 1980, he was appointed Head of the Composition Department and orchestration pedagogue at the Academy of Arts in Tirana. In the years 1993-1994, he continued his professional activities in Greece, teaching at the music school and giving private lessons in the city of Kardhica.

In 1996-1997, he was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Music at the Academy of Arts in Tirana. From 1997 until his death, he served as a pedagogue in orchestration at the Academy. In 1995, he was awarded the title “Professor.” He was honored with various awards and titles, including “Distinguished Artist” in 1989.

Gjon Simoni’s musical creativity is rich and diverse; it has been performed in all major musical events in Albania and abroad. He has made significant contributions to the development of theoretical thought both in Albanian media and in various conferences and seminars abroad. His contribution also extends to the development and revaluation of the works of Albanian composers of the first half of the 20th century. He worked on completing the work of composer Tonin Harapi. In 1999, he was honored with an honorary diploma from the International Biographical Center Cambridge, England.

During the period 1986-1999, he arranged about 150 folk songs and over 300 arrangements of light music songs, as well as making over 50 arrangements of vocal instrumental pieces from Albanian and world literature. He orchestrated the opera “Our Land” and “Beyond the Mist” by composer Pjetër Gaci. He has written many essays, literary and artistic critiques of works in various newspapers and periodicals. Gjon Simoni has orchestrated chamber music, orchestral music, artistic films, and children’s films, vocal works, etc.

Gjon Simoni passed away accidentally in Tirana on July 2, 1999.
