Albania’s foreign currency reserves exceed 8.4 billion euros

Albania’s foreign currency reserves exceeded 8.4 billion euros at the end of August 2026. This marked their highest recorded level. According to the Bank of Albania, reserves increased by 15.1% from the end of 2025. They also rose by 18.7% year on year.
Foreign currency purchases by the central bank likely contributed to the increase. During the first quarter of 2026, the Bank of Albania bought around 140 million euros from commercial banks. This marked a record for first-quarter purchases. The total rose by 320% compared with the same period in 2025.
Debt securities account for about 67% of the reserves. Meanwhile, cash deposits make up 25%. The remainder consists of gold and Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) held with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Foreign currency reserves support Albania’s external financial stability. They help the country meet its obligations and cover the economy’s demand for foreign currency. They can also help stabilise shocks to the exchange rate.
