Ali Pasha Tepelena, the ruler of Ioannina

On January 24, 1822, the “Lion of Epirus,” Ali Pasha Tepelena, was killed.
His demise was ordered by the Sultan, who criticized Ali Pasha’s attempts to establish an independent territory beyond the High Gate. The General Directorate of Archives shared today, on social networks, a copy of the death sentence (jafta), which bears a visual resemblance to a teardrop.
Under the 40-year rule of Ali Pasha from 1788 to 1822 in the pashalik of Ioannina, significant progress was achieved in the realms of economy, foreign and domestic policy, and the consolidation of state structures, including the military and police. Furthermore, there were notable advancements in the fields of education and culture, demonstrating a comprehensive impact on various aspects of society.
In particular, under Ali Pasha’s rule, there was rapid development in infrastructure with objects of social-cultural significance and function, including libraries and schools. Religious structures such as churches, mosques, and monasteries also experienced growth. Additionally, there were advancements in military infrastructure, exemplified by the establishment of a military academy.
