On January 24, 1822, Ali Pasha of Tepelena, famously known as the “Lion of Epirus,” was assassinated.

His death was ordered by the Sultan, who feared Ali Pasha’s growing ambitions to establish an independent territory separate from the Ottoman Empire.

Under Ali Pasha’s 40-year rule (1788–1822) over the Pashalik of Ioannina, significant progress was made in various areas, including the economy, foreign and domestic policies, and the consolidation of state, military, and law enforcement institutions. The era also saw remarkable advancements in education and culture.

Particularly noteworthy were the development of infrastructure, including cultural and social institutions such as libraries and schools, religious buildings like churches, mosques, tekkes, and monasteries, as well as military facilities, including a military academy.
