Archaeologists have uncovered the defensive wall of the lower city of Amantia, near Vlora, dating back to the 3rd century BC. The structure, destroyed in the 6th century AD, marks a previously unknown element of the ancient Illyrian settlement.

Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sports Blendi Gonxhja said the August–September excavations brought “new archaeological discoveries and restoration projects in the Amantia Archaeological Park.”

The newly found fortification offers fresh insights into Amantia’s urban and public organization, adding an important chapter to its history. Meanwhile, restoration works are safeguarding monumental tombs and other vulnerable structures from climate damage.

These discoveries not only expand knowledge of Illyrian urban life but also preserve and present Amantia’s heritage for today’s visitors and future generations.
