Archaeologists Unearth 6th-Century Basilica in Kastërc, Kosovo

In the castle of Kastërc, Suharekë, Kosovo, archaeologists are excavating a paleochristian basilica.

Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports, Hajrulla Çeku, announced the news. He said archaeologist Berat Ademi from the Kosovo Archaeological Institute leads the work.

Fragments of ceramics, glass pieces, frescoes, and inscribed tiles prove the basilica was built in the early 6th century. After destruction by Slavic invasions, it became a burial site with about 80 graves found.

Alongside excavations, conservation and restoration efforts are underway to preserve this rare heritage. The goal is to turn it into a cultural tourism attraction.
