Representatives of the institutions of the government of Kosovo and the opposition are holding a meeting today at the American Embassy, upon the request of the latter, where they will discuss the Association of municipalities with a Serbian majority.

The elected members of the opposition parties have confirmed their participation in the meeting, while it is expected that the Presidency, the Prime Minister’s Office and the Assembly will also be present. 

The meeting was initiated by Ambassador Jeff Hovenier, while the Embassy announced that they are calling a meeting with exponents from the political sphere in Kosovo, leaders and representatives from civil society to discuss an “important matter”, i.e. the establishment of the Association.

Members of civil society and other experts are expected to be present at the meeting.

Kosovo and Serbia reached an agreement on the establishment of the Association of municipalities with a Serbian majority in 2013 and 2015. But, according to the Constitutional Court of Kosovo, the Agreement on the principles for the establishment of the Association of 2015 is not in full line with the Constitution. There are a total of 23 points of the agreement that are not in the spirit of the Constitution, and among them is that the Association is not based on multi-ethnicity, as it unites municipalities in which an ethnic community is the majority, in this case the Serbian community. However, despite Kosovo’s opposition, the United States and the European Union have requested that Kosovo respect the agreements reached and establish the Association.
