Austrian MEP Calls for International Investigation into Zubin Potok Attack

European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee discussed the recent terrorist attack on the Ibër-Lepenc water channel near Zubin Potok.
Committee Chair David McAllister voiced the European Parliament’s concerns about the escalating tensions in northern Kosova, emphasizing its strong condemnation of these acts, which he said threaten the region’s stability.
Several Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) expressed solidarity with Kosova, with some advocating for an international investigation. Austrian MEP Thomas Waitz specifically called for an inquiry into the explosion at the water channel near Zubin Potok.
“I welcome Serbia’s stated willingness to participate in the investigation. However, I recall similar promises after the Banjska incident, which led to no concrete results. It is crucial to identify the perpetrators. The Serbian government must acknowledge that many involved are within Serbia, belong to the Serbian community, and have adopted extremist ideologies. This acknowledgment is necessary based on recent events. I expect the Serbian government to demonstrate its commitment to combating these terrorists within its territory,” Waitz asserted.
Following remarks by Kosova’s Foreign Minister Donika Gërvalla, German MEP Michael Gahler described the presentation as both “alarming and clear”.
“This situation requires deep reflection and a thorough understanding of the events that transpired. When President Vucic visits Brussels tomorrow, we will closely observe his response. Serious allegations have been made, and the first question is what evidence supports these claims. I strongly believe the European Commission must take these matters seriously,” Gahler said.
Kosova’s Foreign Minister, Donika Gërvalla-Schwarz, reminded attendees that following the Zubin Potok attack, Kosova Police seized a significant cache of weapons.
In her address, Gërvalla-Schwarz highlighted Serbia’s alignment with Russia, citing a 2022 agreement to coordinate foreign policy despite Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which she said underscores a clear partnership between the two nations.
